Each Cooperative conducts the marketing of its seafood independent of the others. However, they do exchange market information from time to time.
Several aquaculture/mariculture ventures have been started in Belize of late. These include shrimp farms. The Majority interest or ownership in aquaculture/mariculture ventures in Belize are owned by foreigners. The fishing cooperatives have not yet indicated interest in these areas of development within the industry. The typical reason being that the technology is new and advanced. However, when one or more of those ventures become successful it is hoped that interest will surface.
Deep sea fishing is still virgin territory in this area. A higher percentage of local ownership will be favoured by both fishermen and government whenever foreign interest in this area of investment arises. What is sorely needed here is extensive research.
In Belize there exists no success story in secondary processing operations of fishery products, although many efforts have been made. Examples are in the manufacturing of fish meal and fish cakes, problems other than technology exist for these industries.
